‘Guardian angel’ who helped shelter whistleblower Edward Snowden needs Canada’s aid immediately: lawyer
MONTREAL – One of seven people who helped shelter former CIA whistleblower Edward Snowden when he fled to Hong Kong is in failing health and needs Canada’s help, his lawyer Robert Tibbo said Monday. Canada must permit the immediate immigration of Ajith Pushpa Kumara or he risks being deported back to Sri Lanka, where he risks being abused and tortured, Tibbo said in an interview. All applied for refugee status in Hong Kong and all were rejected. With the help of Tibbo and Montreal-based lawyers, all seven also applied for refugee status in Canada. Requests for their applications to be fast-tracked by the Canadian government were rebuffed and the asylum seekers are facing months or years waiting for Canada’s decision.
Kumara has also recently asked for a temporary resident permit in Canada – which would allow him to travel to the country while awaiting a decision on his refugee application – but has so far not heard back, Tibbo said. Tibbo said Hong Kong is notorious for its low acceptance rate for asylum seekers and said there is little chance the seven people will be allowed to stay. Human Rights Watch is also pushing for Canada to help Kumara. We urge Canada to move swiftly, and give this man, who did no more than help another asylum seeker, a reason to hope and to heal in safety. Hong Kong immigration authorities recently removed Tibbo from Kumara’s case because the lawyer was overseas.
Tibbo said Kumara was also initially denied access to another lawyer before being able to secure counsel for the hearing. Snowden told The Canadian Press via Tibbo that Kumara is facing an injustice.

This is the key passage pointed to when people discuss the possibility of guardian angels. It’s not so apparent from Scripture whether each person or each believer has an angel assigned to him or her. One commentator states that the Jews had fully developed the belief in guardian angels during the time between the Old and New Testament periods. Some early church fathers believed that each person had not only a good angel assigned to him but also a demon as well. At any rate, the belief in guardian angels has been around for a long time.
We have movies that focus on angels and we have TV shows that portray angels as being assigned to help. As stated earlier, God does use angels to minister to us. The Bible is clear to say that God uses angels just like He uses people – He in no way needs us or them to accomplish His purposes, but chooses to use us nonetheless. In the end, whether we have an angel assigned to protect us or not, we have a greater assurance that God gives: that if we are His children through faith in Christ, He works all things together for good, and that Jesus Christ will never leave us nor forsake us. God, the Father, sent His only Son to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in Him.
Jesus, the creator and eternal Son of God, who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buried, and rose from the dead according to the Bible.
