I was saved by a ‘guardian angel’ cop: Vegas massacre survivor
A woman who attended the Las Vegas music festival where a gunman opened fire Sunday night said a police officer was her “Guardian angel” as chaos unfolded around her. Gail Davis, who was at the Route 91 Harvest Festival with her husband to see Jason Aldean, told “CBS This Morning” that the country crooner sang about five songs before she heard repeated “Pop” noises that sounded like firecrackers. “That’s not firecrackers,” her husband told her when the pops continued. “I looked over to my right where this girl had been standing right beside me, and she had fallen,” Davis said. “First, she stood there and she grabbed her stomach and she looked at her hands and her hands were all bloody, and she was wearing, like, a little crop top and, you know, blue jean shorts and cowboy boots, and she looked at her hands and her hands were bloody, and she just kind of screamed, and she just fell back.” Davis and her husband started to run toward a concession area, where they met a selfless Las Vegas Metro police officer. “[He] grabbed us [and] said, ‘Come here,'” Davis told CBS of the officer. “And we went running inside and the lights were on, and everything else was dark – they turned the stage lights off – and we went running in there, and he said, ‘Get down.’ So we got down. My husband was in front of me, and there was another two ladies behind us, and the officer actually covered up to protect me from being shot because I couldn’t get out all the way.” When the gunfire temporarily stopped, the officer got up with his weapon out – but shielded Davis once again when the shots resumed, before leading the couple to another tent. “He was like my guardian angel, he never left me,” Davis recalled on the show. When Davis’s husband was hit with shrapnel, the officer knew he had to lead the couple out of the venue. “We need to get you out of here. But stay low,” Davis recalled the officer saying, before they ran out a back door. “He said, ‘Stay out of the light. Just run. Just run and keep down. Keep down.'”. Davis told CBS she doesn’t know where the hero officer is, but would like to have the chance to thank him. “I saw his face, and I’m going to try to go down to Metro and see if I can find him and look at his pictures, because he saved me,” she said.

Here at Guardian Angels parish we place ourselves deliberately under the protection of the guardian angels, as all individuals are, but what is unique for us is that we are to honor the guardian angels where most others might neglect this important work. Who are the guardian angels? Angels are spiritual beings; they are pure intellect and have no physical bodies. The letter to the Hebrews says of the guardian angels, “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent to minister for them, who shall receive the inheritance of salvation?”. This is the function of the guardian angels; they are to lead us, if we wish it, to the Kingdom of Heaven. In the Old Testament we see the guardian angels not only acting as the executors of God’s wrath against the cities of the plain, but they delivered Lot from danger. In Exodus 32:34, God says to Moses: “My angel shall go before you” and in Psalm 90:11 we read that God has “Given his angels charge over you; to keep you in all thy ways.” Jesus Himself said of the guardian angels, “See that you despise not one of these little ones: for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.” It was a guardian angel that ministered to Christ in the garden of Gethsemane, and a guardian angel who delivered St. Peter from prison. Our guardian angels can act upon our senses and upon our imaginations, but not upon our wills, except by working on our intellect through the senses and the imagination. Finally, guardian angels are not separated from us after death, but remain with us in heaven. We can come to understand who we are in relationship to God by simply appreciating the reality of the guardian angels. Jerome summed it perfectly when he wrote, “How great the dignity of the soul, since each one has from his birth an angel commissioned to guard it.” May the guardian angels keep us from sin that mars the dignity God gave us and imperils our immortal souls. Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here. Ever this day be at my side, to light, to guard, to rule, and to guide.
